Art has historically been linked to power and to what the dominant ideology considered socially and morally acceptable. Among the subjects addressed by artists throughout history, there has been little room for such "countercultural" content as homosexuality, gender identity, or sexual diversity. Often, when these themes were depicted, it was with the intention of labeling them as "aberrations" or unnatural behaviors. However, there were also artists, especially in the Greco-Roman era and its Italian Renaissance counterpart, who were openly homosexual and who reflected this condition as simply another aspect of life. Thus, countless works of art contain more or less veiled references to homosexuality, from the depiction of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, who became a gay icon, to masterpieces by artistic geniuses such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Hieronymus Bosch. And I, Sebastian Moreno, take inspiration from all of them to work on my own representations of gay love, male nudity, and homosexual life.
